Equality and Diversity Champion

The Work-based Learning (WBL) Equality and Diversity Champion role was established in May 2016 with two year funding from Welsh Government to provide the WBL provider network with a supportive structure to help increase the take up of Apprenticeships by individuals from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) communities and disabled people.

The role will also work to promote equality for women in the workplace and assist the WBL provider network to challenge gender stereotyping in certain industry sectors.

Purpose

The role will provide practical advice and support to assist the WBL provider network to:

  • Plan their individual strategies and implement their action plans to increase apprenticeship opportunities for individuals from BAME communities and those with disabilities
  • Identify, disseminate and champion good practice currently seen within the WBL provider network
  • Collaborate with other organisations who champion learning for individuals from BAME communities and those with disabilities
  • Promote equality for women in the workplace and highlight opportunities for women in certain industries where there is under representation
  • Raise awareness of Apprenticeships and the Work Based Learning sector to the wider community
  • Provide opportunities and links for the WBL network to promote Apprenticeships to diverse communities, schools, parents and other learning and employment support agencies

Current Activities

  • Mapping equality and diversity good practice across the WBL provider network
  • Producing work plan identifying strategies, activities, training and resources to support the WBL provider network in their equality and diversity approaches and application
  • Meetings with diversity umbrella organisations and employment and learning support agencies to raise awareness of Apprenticeship opportunities and identify progression pathways to Apprenticeships
  • Establishing a WBL Equality and Diversity Champion Group with representatives from the WBL provider network and external diversity and equality organisations
  • Promoting the WBL Equality and Diversity project through attendance at public and third sector forums and events
