Welsh Apprenticeship Ambassadors

The WBL Bilingual Champion has recently worked closely with the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol to launch the inaugural Welsh-medium and Bilingual Apprenticeship Ambassador Campaign, which aims to highlight the benefits of completing apprenticeships through the medium of Welsh or bilingually; where apprentices and prospective apprentices can hear directly from apprentices like them.

The first five Welsh-medium Apprenticeship Ambassadors are:

  • Elen Jones – Youth Work Apprentice for Urdd Gobaith Cymru in Anglesey
  • Steffan Walker – Hospitality Management Apprentice at Gwesty’r Harbourmaster, Aberaeron studying through Cambrian Training Company
  • Seren Jenkins – Translation Apprentice for NHS Wales studying through Gower College Swansea
  • Ifan Phillips – Electrical Installation Apprentice at D.E. Phillips & Sons Ltd, Crymych studying through Pembrokeshire College
  • Owain Carbis – Creative and Digital Media Apprentice at BBC Wales, Cardiff studying through Sgil Cymru

The apprentices attended the ambassador training in Aberystwyth on 22 January 2020 and each performed an Instagram takeover of the Coleg Cymraeg’s @dyddyfodoldi Instagram account for a day during Apprenticeship Week 2020 to show a ‘day in the life of a Welsh speaking apprentice’. The feedback from the takeover was extremely positive as it raised the profile of Welsh-medium and bilingual apprenticeships with a new audience.

The ambassadors have been, and will be, involved in more social media campaigns and careers events across Wales. Be sure to follow @dyddyfodoldi, @Bilingual_wbl, @NTFWwbl; and keep an eye out for the hashtags #WelshAtWork and #CymraegYnYGweithle to find out more about what the ambassadors get up to.
