Over the past year COVID-19 has affected us all, with many significant changes to our lifestyles and the way we operate. Despite there having been a number of challenges our partnerships across Wales have grown stronger and, have allowed us to adapt and evolve our delivery.

In March 2020 we pledged to the network and Welsh Government that we would continue to deliver Skills Competition Wales 2020/21 – a series of local vocational skills competitions for apprentices and learners in Wales.

Through working closely with our partners, we have been able to transform the delivery model of Skills Competition Wales, ensuring competitors can participate in a COVID secure environment.

56 competitions are set to be delivered this cycle between the 22 February 2021 to the 23 April 2021.30 of these competitions are have been designed for remote participation, where competitors are able to compete from the comfort of their own homes. The remaining 26 competitions, which are primarily in the engineering, construction and hospitality areas however, continue to require access to on-site facilities to ensure an effective competition is delivered. It is intended that these competitions take place at the competitors place of study, with a number of staff from across Wales utilising the competitions as a means of assessment.

The efforts from the education and training sector in Wales has ensured that Team Wales is annually increasing their engagement and participation in Skills Competitions, in Wales, UK and Internationally.

Skills Competition Wales 2020/21 received over 1200 registrations amidst the height of the COVID pandemic, an achievement the Inspiring Skills Excellence in Wales project could not have achieved without the continuous support of providers and employers in Wales.

We are grateful to our many partners who continue to support our work and we very much look forward to celebrating the achievements of the competitors and staff at a much needed Celebration Event that will be held virtually later this year.

Following in the footsteps of Wales, WorldSkills UK have announced that WorldSkills UK Competitions are taking place this year. Similarly to Wales they have designed and developed their competitions to ensure they can still be delivered safely and effectively, with all competitions being delivered and assessed in a Covid secure way.

Registrations to participate in these competitions open 19 April – 14 May 2021 and are available at worldskillsuk.org
