Raising Standards: The Transformative Power of Skills Competitions Across Wales

A skills competition can turn a classroom, workshop or training centre into something very different: a high-pressure, industry-focused environment where learners put their skills to the test, tutors benchmark their practice, and employers see the next generation of Welsh talent in action.
Delivered through the Inspiring Skills Excellence in Wales project, Skills Competition Wales brings providers, employers, and industry experts together to deliver competitions across Wales, with providers playing a crucial role as competition leads and hosts. Across the most recent cycle, participating venues hosted 65 distinct Pan-Wales competitions, welcoming 1,168 competitors. Delivering events on this scale requires host institutions to provide world-class facilities, specialised industry-grade equipment, and dedicated technical expertise.
Crucially, this local engagement builds a direct pathway to elite success on the world stage. The impact of this pipeline is clear: Welsh colleges Cardiff and Vale College and Pembrokeshire College secured the joint top spot on the medal table at last year’s WorldSkills UK National Finals, and six Welsh competitors are heading to China this September to take part in WorldSkills Shanghai. Hosting and Leading on Skills Competition Wales does not just stretch and push regional talent; it provides an important launching pad for Welsh learners to excel nationally and internationally.
Paul Evans, Project Director for Inspiring Skills Excellence in Wales, highlighted the importance of hosting these events.
“Hosting and leading these competitions gives colleges and training providers a powerful platform to put industry standards directly into practice. When providers open their doors to host or take on leadership roles, they create an environment that challenges learners to raise their aspirations while allowing staff to benchmark their training against the very best across Wales.”
For providers such as Cambrian Training, taking on the role of competition lead provides an opportunity to shape the competition experience from the ground up, working closely with industry and other providers to ensure that skills are tested against current and relevant standards.
Alison Collingridge, Skills Competition Lead at Cambrian Training, explained:
“Being a competition lead is a fantastic opportunity to bring together learners, assessors, employers, and training providers around a shared focus on skills excellence. It allows us to ensure that competitions reflect the standards and expectations of industry, while giving learners a challenging environment in which to demonstrate what they can do. The role also creates valuable opportunities for learners to challenge themselves, build confidence and see where their skills can take them.”
This impact is mirrored at Bridgend College, where hosting competitions drives confidence and transforms learner mindsets.
