After tragically losing both his parents at different times during his childhood, Jordan Jones is no stranger to adversity.

Furthermore, he has also had to overcome the emotional and physical trauma of moving home several times at a young age, including leaving his birthplace of Stoke-on-Trent to relocate to Bangor so he could be supported by his aunt and uncle.

Despite not having the easiest of starts in life, Jordan has managed to overcome these incredibly difficult and lie changing challenges and turn his life into something very positive.

Having recently turned 18, Jordan can look back on a huge transition from troubled youngster to a confident, forward looking adult with a bright future in the motor industry. A Traineeship Engagement programme with learning provider Grŵp Llandrillo Menai’s Caernarfon campus has been the catalyst for his surge in confidence and motivation.

Now Jordan has been recognised as one of Wales’ star learners by being shortlisted for this year’s Apprenticeship Awards Cymru. He will be competing to become Traineeship Learner of the Year (Engagement) at the prestigious awards ceremony at the Celtic Manor Resort, Newport on October 20.

Jointly organised by the Welsh Government and the National Training Federation for Wales (NTfW), the coveted awards are sponsored by Pearson PLC and supported by media partner, Media Wales.

Thirty star learners, employers and learning providers involved in the delivery of successful skills programmes across Wales have been shortlisted for the Apprenticeship Awards Cymru.

The Apprenticeship Programme is funded by the Welsh Government with support from the European Social Fund.

The awards are designed to showcase and celebrate the outstanding achievements of learners, employers, tutors and assessors who have excelled in contributing to the development of the Welsh Government’s Traineeships and Apprenticeship programmes.

An initial placement at Tyn Lon Volvo in Llanfair PG has seen Jordan excel with the company where he now has a job. He has started a Level 2 Diploma in Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair and recently completing additional Essential Skills Wales qualifications in Communications and Application of Number, both at Level 2.

Jordan’s excellence was recognised as he won Grŵp Llandrillo Menai’s Traineeship Engagement of the Year award in February.

College engagement team leader Eric Christie said: “He’s a remarkable young man who lived through dark times as a child. He grabbed everything that the Traineeship offered through his job, his qualification and his life.”

Jordan said: “It scares me to think that I could still be in that dark place without the support I have had from my family, college and employer.”

Praising the standard of applicants this year and congratulating Jordan on being shortlisted for an award, Skills and Science Minister, Julie James said: “This year’s shortlisted entrants include exceptional individuals who have excelled in their workplace and learning providers and employers that have gone the extra mile to support the apprentices they are working with. Their stories never cease to amaze and inspire.

“Apprenticeships and vocational skills training are essential ingredients of economic success and vital tools in building a stronger, fairer and more equal Wales.

“These awards provide a perfect platform to celebrate success and reward the hard work and dedication of learners, employers and training providers across Wales. I wish everyone the very best of luck for the night.”
