Developing Careers Education, Information, Advice and Guidance (CEIAG)
Through the Employment and Skills Plan 2022-25, and on the back of consultation with industry, the Cardiff Capital Region Skills Partnership (CCRSP) has identified ‘build on approaches to Careers Education, Information, Advice and Guidance to address issues of sector perception and promote the key sectors as viable career options’ as a cross cutting theme. In this regard, CCRSP has worked with Careers Wales to develop a joint Action Plan which is being used to address the careers related challenges that have been set by key cluster groups.
Over the Spring period, the CCRSP has ramped up its activities in relation to CEIAG. To elaborate, and again in collaboration with Careers Wales, on the 20 April 2023 the CCRSP provided a strategic update on its Employment and Skills Plan 2022-25, the key sectors across the regional economy and the challenges and opportunities they face. The successful event attracted attendance from around 120 careers advisors who are now better informed to impart knowledge and understanding to individuals looking to develop their careers in SE Wales.
Similarly, the CCRSP worked with CS Connected, the cluster representing organisations within the compound semiconductor sector, and as part of a successful outreach event. On the 26 April 2023, and at the USW Atrium in Cardiff, CS Connected upskilled careers advisors on the opportunities that exist for potential new entrants into the compound semiconductor sector. The event attracted over 70 delegates, primarily from Careers Wales / Working Wales, and the event will act as a catalyst for related events in the future.
Finally, on the 4 May 2023 at the CCFC Stadium, Cardiff Commitment held an event entitled ‘The schools of today creating and shaping the future workforce of tomorrow’ which was supported by the CCRSP. The event provided an opportunity for school leaders to hear first-hand from the employers and sectors who are driving economic growth across the region and discover the contribution that schools can make in influencing future skills and talent pipelines. The event also helped Careers and Work-Related Experiences (CWRE) become more effectively integrated in the curriculum and helped staff to learn about the latest developments from the world of work.
Welsh Governments Young Persons Guarantee (YPG)
Through the Programme for Government 2021-26, Welsh Government has made a commitment to deliver a Young Person’s Guarantee (YPG) which aims to provide everyone under 25, who are not in Education, Employment or Training across Wales with an offer of a place in education or training, or support to get into work or self-employment.
Many components are in place to provide a basis to support a successful Young Person’s Guarantee, which includes programmes such as Jobs Growth Wales+, ReAct+, Communities for Work or Apprenticeships.
The YPG endeavours to ensure no lost generation across Wales, and the Cardiff Capital Region Skills Partnership (CCRSP) has supported roll out by undertaking a desk top research exercise to identify the broad range of projects and programmes that are already supporting young people across SE Wales and to better understand the regional landscape. The CCRSP has also utilised its networks and have held a range of engagement events to encourage collaboration and as part of a ‘Team Wales’ ethos.
More recently, Welsh Government has published its annual YPG report ‘Young Person’s Guarantee generation Z series: annual report 2022’. This is the first in a series for reports this year that will provide qualitative and quantitative data as well as analysis.
The report provides an update on the activities underway to help people aged 16 to 24 to find education, employment, or training and identifies the ways in which actions have been taken to improve the identification of those young people who might need additional support.
Moving into the summer, the CCRSP will continue to support the flagship YPG programme and will drive support for the regional YPG Advisory Group which will provide information and influence Welsh Government.
Linked to the YPG, the CCRSP aspire to translate its strategic Employment and Skills Plan into an ‘easy read’ version and aimed at the younger population. This ‘easy read’ may then also inform the production of animated videos to highlight the opportunities across the regions key sectors.
