Providing personal mentoring and creating opportunities for young people starting out in the world of work is fundamental for Itec Skills and Employment.

Itec is a work-based learning provider, enabling career starts and boosts for all ages. Itec’s Jobs Growth Wales+ programme provides bedrock skills and qualifications for those aged 16-19 striving for employment.

At 18 years old, Kian Corrigan had found traditional classroom learning challenging and was uncertain about his future. However, with a keen interest in vehicles, Kian began to explore options for increasing his practical skills as he aspired for a career in the motor industry.

Kian said, “I felt left behind until I discovered Itec Skills and Employment. Although I wasn’t suited to the classroom environment, they took a chance on me and put me with a respected local employer where I’ve excelled. I’ll never forget the opportunity I have been given.”

Kian enrolled in the Jobs Growth Wales+ Advancement Strand at Itec’s Cwmbran centre, where he received personalised support from his Learner Coach, Helen Kerison, and Employability Officer, James Loveridge.

Together, they assessed Kian’s strengths and needs, eventually securing him a placement at Cwmbran Tuning, a local MOT centre. In this environment, Kian excelled, quickly adapting to the industry and demonstrating a natural aptitude for the work. His dedication paid off as he successfully completed his Level 1 qualification in Light Vehicle Maintenance.

Itec has three strands of the Jobs Growth Wales programme which at every stage is beneficial to both learners and employers.

Cwmbran Tuning has been exceptionally supportive of Kian’s journey, encouraging him to explore his passion for mechanics. By investing in local youth, they have not only contributed to Kian’s personal and professional growth but have also reaped the benefits of his hard work and dedication.

The team at Itec is grateful to Cwmbran Tuning for their role in Kian’s successful transition to employment.

Kian’s transformation goes beyond just securing a job. He has developed into a well-rounded individual who works effectively within a team to achieve positive outcomes.
