Engineering is a booming sector across South West Wales, with a high demand for skilled workers and exciting career prospects. The Regional Learning and Skills Partnership South West Wales (RLSP) have been working on ways to showcase the opportunities and pathways available in engineering, we have developed a comprehensive and interactive website exploring the opportunities within the engineering sector, alongside engaging videos featuring the young learners’ experiences on site with businesses in the region.

This autumn, the RLSP, in partnership with local businesses and schools, has been inspiring the engineers of tomorrow. We’ve launched our new interactive ‘Explore Engineering’ website and hosted roadshows that not only highlight the engineering sector but also provide young people with hands-on experiences. Our aim is to inspire both young learners and adults to consider engineering as a career choice while also raising awareness of the current and future skills needs within the sector.

Learners from Ysgol Bryngwyn, Ysgol Hari Tudor, and Olchfa School have experienced the world of engineering through a host of different businesses within the sector, which included Qualitek, Ledwood, and C&P Engineering. In the new year learners from Ysgol Ystalyfera-Bro Dur will visit OCU Hornbill.

Learners heard from industry experts on the importance of engineering in the world today and had the opportunity to explore our new website ‘Explore Engineering’. Followed on from this, the young people even had the chance to experience the world of engineering first-hand in the workshops trying out the tools and experiencing engineering in the virtual world.

A quote from Olchfa School highlighted how successful the events have been:
“Visiting industry gives our students a real-world perspective, bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application. It helps them understand how concepts learned in the classroom are applied in dynamic work environments, inspiring innovation and preparing them for the challenges of their future careers; this was therefore an invaluable experience for our students at Olchfa and we will certainly be engaging in future opportunities.”
