Towards Cymraeg 2050: A million Welsh Speakers

The National Training Federation for Wales (NTfW) has been commissioned by Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol (the Coleg) to further develop the provision and delivery of Welsh-medium and Bilingual Apprenticeships in Wales.

NTfW has been working closely with the Coleg for a number of years and the new contract will help to work towards achieving the goals set out within the ‘Towards Cymraeg 2050: A million Welsh speakers – Further Education and Apprenticeships Welsh-medium Action Plan’; leading to every apprentice in Wales working their way up the pyramid of learning Welsh, from Awareness through to fluency.

There are six key priority areas to develop in order to ensure consistent progress towards the achievement of the Cymraeg 2050 vision. These areas are: Learner Experience; Staffing Capacity; Provision; Resources; Assessments and Qualifications; and Employer Engagement.

This exciting new collaboration brings together expertise from across the entire post-16 education workforce, as well as promoting the sharing of best practice and existing resources.

Work is currently underway in developing the provision and uptake of Welsh-medium and Bilingual Apprenticeships within the 4 key priority sectors as set out by Welsh Government (i.e. Health and Social Care, Early Years, Agriculture, and Construction); and Ryan Evans, the Bilingual Champion for NTfW is in the process of sourcing Welsh-medium and Bilingual Apprenticeship Ambassadors following the success of the first ever ambassadors during 2019/2020 academic year.

Dr Dafydd Trystan, Registrar of the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol said: “Working closely with Apprenticeship Providers is of key importance to the delivery of the Further Education and Apprenticeships Welsh-medium Action Plan. We are delighted to be able to develop our relationship and work further with NTfW and very much look forward to support each other’s work over the next period to help reach the national aim of a million Welsh speakers.”

Jeff Protheroe, Director of Operations, NTfW said: “Working with the Coleg is a major step forward in our work to increase the level of Welsh-medium and bilingual apprenticeships. Significant progress has already been made by the apprenticeships provider network to address this issue in recent years, but our new relationship with the Coleg, which is underpinned by the FE and Apprenticeships Plan, will take this progress even further.

I would urge all employers and individuals to make the most of the opportunities available through the medium of Welsh and make the Apprenticeships Programme in Wales, a key contributor to the aspirations of a truly bilingual nation.”

The Bilingual Champion will also continue to work closely with Sgiliaith on boosting the confidence of practitioners within the sector to work through the medium of Welsh or bilingually; where he has recently been filmed speaking about his role and about the importance of Welsh-medium and bilingual skills within work-based learning.
