On September 21, Cardiff Capital Region Skills Partnership (CCRSP) successfully held a Careers Round Table with the theme “Collectively Inspiring Young People’s Career Journeys.”.

CCRSP hosted the event which was held partnership with Careers Wales and the Welsh Government.

A broad range of employers and sectors participated in the roundtable discussion along with providers of education and training. The primary purpose of the session was to explore if the current careers offer was fit for purpose, particularly when connecting schools with employers to inspire young people about future career opportunities and address the future needs of the workforce.

Leigh Hughes, Chair of the CCRSP facilitated dialogue among stakeholders and the Minister for Economy, Vaughan Gething MS, was also in attendance to hear first-hand about the various successes and challenges that need to be addressed.

Attendees heard about the range of ‘Careers Discovery Events’ that were taking place across the region and where role models and advocates were providing information on career pathways to young people. The work of Cardiff Commitment, Screen Alliance Wales (SAW) and the Blaenau Gwent STEM Facilitation Project were also singled out as models of good practice.

In terms of the challenges, schools reported issues when implementing the new Curriculum for Wales and the negative perception associated with taking children out of the classroom along with the difficulties in engaging employers, and particularly SMEs.

Clearly, there was a strong desire to improve approaches to careers and work-related experiences and ‘influence those influencing’ the decisions taken by young people. There was also an opportunity raised to better connect the work carried out by schools and FE institutions.

Finally, the event provided a great opportunity for Careers Wales to share an overview of the important work being driven by their Business Engagement Advisors (BEAs) and their Valued Partner Initiative (VPI). In this regard, the CCRSP and Careers Wales have been collaborating to ensure advisors are kept updated on the changing regional economy through a range of events and seminars.
